Instructor profile

Sarah Kamal is a nationally certified Red Cross First Aid instructor who believes in Montessori-style participant-centred interactive education.  She has taught Emergency Response and Community Resilience at Royal Roads University and volunteered for the editorial team of Haznet, the Magazine of the Canadian Risks and Hazards Network, and for the International Journal of First Aid Education.  She volunteered in her community in the Montreal West Island for Whiteside Taylor preschool, the Alexander von Humboldt school, and the boards of the Baie-D'Urfe library and Coop du Grand Orme, an organic farm-to-table store. She had done public first aid events with the Baie-D'Urfe Rescue Squad for 3 years, and was a Baie-D’Urfé Scouts Canada Leader for another 3 years. She is now based in Vancouver, Canada.

Why first aid?

According to a 2014 poll, nearly 40% of Canadians say they’ve been in an emergency situation where they’ve had to perform first aid.  Canadians who have taken a first aid course are twice as likely to say they are “confident” in their skills to be able to help someone experiencing a medical emergency. Why youth and children?

Injuries are the leading cause of death among children and adolescents. Research shows that children offered injury prevention training are more likely to experience fewer injuries at home, school, or at play. They are also encouraged to use these skills to assist others. [more] [also this]
